Safety on all your journeys
Well trained personnel and the most up-to-date technology ensure that you feel safe everywhere, on the Underground, the buses, in the trams and at our stations.
Here we would like to introduce you to our most important safety measures and their functions. We hope, of course, that you will never need them. But please familiarise yourself with them; in the worst case scenario other people’s life or health may depend on your quick, correct action.
| Emergency brake pulls on the Underground and in the tram | ![]() |
All Underground trains and trams are fitted with emergency brake pulls near the door. |
| Emergency stops in the Underground stations | ![]() |
There are at least two emergency brake handles on every platform of the Underground. The emergency stop handle only works for the side of the platform where it is stationed. If, e.g., someone falls onto the track, the emergency brake handle must be pulled immediately. Trains approaching this platform will be halted. The local MVG control centre must then be informed without delay of the reason for the emergency stop via the nearest emergency call point. |
| Defibrillators | ![]() |
Our Underground stations have more and more automatic defibrillators (AED) which anyone can use to save life. Defibrillators interrupt the potentially fatal ventricular fibrillation which occurs in about 90 per cent of cases of sudden heart or circulation failure. The cause is often a coronary. Only a well-aimed electric shock can regulate the disturbed rhythm of the heart and restore the regular heart beat. If a victim is treated with an electric shock within the first minute their survival rate is over 90 per cent. After that their rate sinks by about 10 per cent per minute. After five minutes, at the latest, the first signs of irreparable brain damages appear. After eight to ten minutes without resuscitation the patient is dead as a rule. So, if passers-by, passengers, friends, relatives and colleagues do not help immediately, sudden heart failure is usually fatal! |
| Safety niches | ![]() |
A safety niche can be found under every platform edge which stretches the entire length of the platform. If you fall onto the track, you can reach safety here. Lie flat and still along the wall of the niche and call out for help. Please leave the safety niche only when told by a station officer coming to aid. |
| Emergency calls on the Underground train | ![]() |
Inside the train is an emergency call button under the emergency brake, which enables direct communication with the driver. So, an emergency can be reported even during the journey. The driver can then request further measures by radio and order, e.g., the police, Underground guards, fire fighters or an emergency doctor for the next station. Please speak as calmly and clearly as possible. Do not leave the emergency call point until the driver has finished his questions. |
| Emergency calls in Underground stations | ![]() |
All Underground stations are fitted with emergency call points on the platforms and in the barrier areas. They provide direct connection to the local MVG control centre. Please give your name, location and the reason for your emergency call. |
| Fire extinguishers on the Underground platforms | ![]() |
On every platform are four fire extinguishers which may be used by anyone in case of fire. A guide to fire fighting can be found on every extinguisher.
| Emergency exit signs on platforms and in the Underground tunnel | ![]() |
The whole Underground system displays uniform signs which show passengers the shortest way out in case of emergency. In tunnels signs show the way to the nearest station or emergency exit. |
| Emergency stops on escalators | ![]() |
All escalators are equipped with emergency stop handles - or buttons - to halt the elevator immediately in any dangerous situation (e.g. if someone falls, traps a piece of clothing etc.). The elevator will halt after usage of the emergency stop handle with a sudden jolt (beware of falls!), which is why the hand rest on escalators should generally be held. |
| Emergency calls in the lifts | ![]() |
All lifts are fitted with emergency call points providing direct connection to the local MVG control centre. Please give your name, location and the reason for your emergency call. |
