Go by public transport to the largest
traditional festival in the world
From September 19 until October 4 in 2009 |
|
|
Stress-free travel there and back ... |
|
Without
the efficient MVG transport links, there would hardly be an Oktoberfest:
The "Wiesn” (meadows) attract around 6 million visitors from all over
the world. Each year, well over half of these choose public transport to
get there. And that is why this year we are also upgrading our service.
Using the U-Bahn (underground) lines
U4 and
U5, MVG can take
passengers as far as the "Theresienwiese"
station, right at the entrance to the Oktoberfest, meaning you don’t
have to deal with the problem of parking.
But there are other U-Bahn lines, the U3
and U6,
that stop near to the festival meadow (get off at "Goetheplatz"
or "Poccistraße")
and are a real alternative, especially at peak periods! |
|
More MVG for you |
|
For the duration of the Wiesn we
provide everything: Additional vehicles, longer trains and more frequent
services ensure that you can get there and back safely and quickly,
whether by underground, bus or tram. At the "Wiesn stations” (Theresienwiese,
Schwanthalerhöhe, Goetheplatz and Poccistraße) a train arrives at least
every 5 minutes. Each U-Bahn line operates until around 01.00 hours,
with services every 10 minutes, or more frequently. You will find the last departure times for lines U3, U4,
U5 and U6 in the overview below.

Tickets and Park & Ride parking |

For Wiesn visitors we particularly recommend single or partner day
tickets at the MVV rate; these can be obtained, for instance, in all
ticket machines in the U-Bahn and S-Bahn (tram), stations as well as on
board trams and buses, and are valid for an unlimited number of journeys,
throughout the whole day until 06.00 hours the following day. These
allow spendthrift festival visitors to still get home! For users of the
DB (German Railways) "Bayern-Ticket" or "Bayern-Ticket Single" or "Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket"
(special weekend ticket), MVV transport is already included.
The
CityTourCard - Ticket and discount card for all visitors to Munich.
The CityTourCard is two in one: a ticket valid for all public transport
in Munich and a discount card for many tourist attractions.

Information for football enthusiasts |
To all football
enthusiasts and Oktoberfest visitors,
The football matches of FC Bayern München and TSV 1860 München are a
particular challenge for the public transport system during the duration
of the Wiesn. There may be bottlenecks and some access closures to
stations after the games are over. MVG requests all stadium visitors who
want to go the Wiesn after the match to make sure they travel on
directly to the Goetheplatz
U-Bahn station (around 5 minutes on foot from the festival meadow) and
not to change to the U4 or U5 at the "Odeonplatz” station. |

When it gets late … |
First check your
information - then travel. This is a good idea particularly when you
take one of the last U-Bahn trains and then need a connecting train or
bus. In any case, our night services will still get you safely
home even if the last U-Bahn has left.

Security and Safety |
The Wiesn services
must also of course run without mishap in terms of security and safety.
This is why the MVG is not just in permanent contact with the local
security and safety agencies before and during Wiesn time - primarily
the police - but also makes its own arrangements. Special patrols allow
U-Bahn police teams to work at double strength for some of the time. In
terms of priorities, the special patrols work the U-Bahn stations
throughout the Oktoberfest. And, of course, everything that happens
throughout the entirety of the U-Bahn system is permanently under video
surveillance from the U-Bahn operations centre.
But each passenger can also help to reduce the risk:
MVG requests that if you wish to report unattended luggage or other
suspicious items or behaviour, you should use the telephones that are
located on each U-Bahn platform and in each U-Bahn coach, and in this
way you can make direct contact with an MVG staff member. You can find
more information on security and safety in the U-Bahn, buses and trams
here
